This past weekend I went to a BBQ one town over (Furano, Hokkaido, Japan) and at the BBQ there was a German tourist and an American English Teacher. The topic of conversation involved Beer and Gummy Bears. So I figured I would write a bit about the history of everyone’s favourite bear shaped candy.
If we go back to the early 1900′s there was a man from Bonn, Germany named Hans Riegel Sr. In 1920 he started a company called Haribo and in 1922 he invented a fruit-flavored gum in the shape of a bear called the Dancing Bear. It’s success would later evolve and inspire the Gummy Bear. Originally called Gummibär (rubber bear) or Gummibärchen (little rubber bear) the world was introduced to the now world-famous Gold-Bear candy in 1967. Gummi bears are also one of the few types of candy to have inspired a television show.
